For this to be a viable option your PRODUCTS will probably require most
of the following attributes:-
- relatively unique product, a product of similar quality not readily available to the mass-market
- willingness and ability to market compelling information to potential customers why your product is unique
and respond to any queries about your product
- product you stand behind, your customer will be refunded in full if not satisfied
- product with many recorded testimonials
- product so impressive that customers will spontaneously tell others about it
- shipping cost of the product is relatively small compared to the total cost
For this to be a viable option your BUSINESS will probably require most
of the following attributes:-
- ownership of a real 'bricks & mortar' business allowing potential clients to
verify your business credentials and physical location prior to ordering
- customer oriented approach to service and support
- ability to process credit card transactions from major cards
- understanding that, like a 'real business, an e-business will probably
take at least two years before it starts returning meaningful and consistent sales
There are at least two ways of trying to turn your DREAM of an on-line business
selling products to a world market into reality:-
OPTION A - Build, and they may come ? - (Traditional Approach)
Contract a web developer to build a web site for you with e-commerce functionality,
and complete final payment on day web site goes on-line:-
- STRENGTHS: very easy to find a Web Developer who will work for a pre-paid amount
- WEAKNESSES: eBusiness may never return the initial, or ongoing, money you invested in it
- OPPORTUNITIES: large expansion of your sales, but each improvement web site will incur a fee
- THREATS: if initial version web site is not successful, you may sacrifice
when, in fact, web site may not be far from being successful
OPTION B - Ongoing Partnership with a Web Developer - (Payment via Commission)
Convince a web developer to build and SEO a web site for you with on-line ordering,
where only payment will be a commission on each sale of your product.
- STRENGTHS: NO financial risk, only risk would be your time. This risk for success is transferred to the web developer
- WEAKNESSES: your product\business would need to be suitably compelling for a web developer
to risk their initial time and money on developing a web site
- OPPORTUNITIES: large expansion of your sales, with no direct charge for ongoing improvement of web site\SEO
- THREATS: unlike upfront payment, unlikely to be specific deadlines for completion of initial stages
of web site due to beginning revenue to web developer being limited
