For many years now I have used OziExplorer moving map software on my laptop conected to a Garmin Etrex GPS to help with my navigation when in the bush.Although this setup was ok, the laptop can be a bit of a problem.Rough roads can destroy hard drives and screen hinges and if you don't have a passenger who can hold it on their lap they are very hard to securely mount.

I started to look at alternatives

PDA's or Pocket computers

A few years ago I purchased an early PDA (Compaq Ipaq 3600) from Ebay and installed Oziexplorer CE which is a version of Oziexplorer made for PDA's and Pocket Computers and paid for a registered version which enables free updates for life. This was connected to my Garmin Etrex via a data cable purchased from GPSOZ.This setup worked OK although a bit slow due to the limited speed and memory of the PDA

Android Tablet

Recently I purchased a Cheap Chinese 7 " Android Tablet ( Android 2.2 OS with 2GB internal storage and upto 32GB with external SD card)

I installed OziExplorer for Android and paid for the registered version

When Connected to a USB GPS it seems to work OK (haven't tried it out in the bush as yet)

Maps (installed on the SD External card )

These have to be converted to the Oziexplorer OzFx3 format using img2ozf software downloaded from the Oziexplorer site.(note you need the full registered version of Oziexplorer to do this)

See Oziexplorer Web Site for more details

Mounting the Tablet in the car.

After much thought I decided to mount the Tablet on the Cup Holders in the centre of the dash board of the 4Runner using a fabricated bracket made out of plastic
