Configuring a Melb PC Dial-up Connection with Windows XP

To configure dial-up in Windows XP it is necessary to log in as administrator. However it is not recommended to operate permanently as administrator, as this increases security risks, so once you've finished configuring dial-up log back in as a standard user.

If you've come to this page from Creating a Melb PC Dial-up Connection with Windows XP just continue. Otherwise bring up your Melb PC dial-up connection window by double clicking the desktop link.

Step 1

In the connect window adjust settings as desired.

Tick Save this user name and password for the following users if you don't want to enter it each time

Select Anyone who uses this computer if you have more than one Windows account and wish all users to be able to use your dial-up connection.

Click Properties.

Step 2

Under the General tab you can add different dial-up numbers by clicking Alternate.

It is suggested you set up the Intranet number (8626 5001) as a separate dial-up connection in case it cycles through the other numbers and reaches the Intranet one. It also makes it more obvious you're dialling in on the Intranet.

To do so follow the instruction on the previous page, giving the connection a different name (e.g. Melb PC Intranet) and using the Intranet number.

Step 3

Under the Options tab choose settings as desired.

Untick Redial if line is dropped.

Ensure Include Windows logon domain is unticked.

Set idle time to never.

Step 4

Under the Networking tab ensure PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet is chosen.

Untick File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Untick Client for Microsoft Networks.

Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.

Note: QoS Packet Scheduler will be ticked but greyed out if installed and can be ignored.

Step 5

Select Obtain an IP address automatically.

Select Obtain DNS server address automatically, then click Advanced.

Step 6

Tick Use the default gateway on remote network.

Tick Use IP header compression.

Step 7

Under the WINS tab untick Enable LMHOSTS lookup.

Tick Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Click OK twice to return to Melb PC Properties window (as at step 4).

Step 8

Under the Advanced tab in the Windows Firewall section click Settings.

Step 9

If you aren't using another firewall program it is highly recommended you activate the Windows Firewall.

For a stand alone computer connecting via dial-up select On and tick Don't allow exceptions.

Further configuration is possible for networked computers but isn't covered here.

Click OK twice to return to the dial-up connection window.

You're now ready to go on-line but, as has already been indicated, it is not recommended to operate on-line using the administrator account so log into a standard user account on your system prior to connecting.
