Creating a Melb PC Dial-up Connection with Windows XP

To create a dial-up connection in Windows XP it is necessary to log in as administrator. However it is not recommended to operate permanently as administrator, as this increases security risks, so once you've finished configuring dial-up log back in as a standard user.

Step 1

Open the New Connection Wizard (Start > All Programs > Accesories > Communications > New Connection Wizard).

Click Next.

Step 2

Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.

Step 3

Select Set up my connection manually and click Next

Step 4

Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.

Step 5

Enter a name for the connection, e.g. Melb PC and click Next.

Step 6

Enter a phone number and click Next.

8626 5000 (180 lines)
9697 4000 (180 lines)
0198 333 365  (35 lines)
  - Greater Melbourne number

8626 5001 (20 lines) Intranet

Note: To disable call waiting for this particular call, prefix the number with *44 for Telstra or #87 for Optus, e.g. *4486265000

Step 7

Enter your user name (without @melbpc.org.au) and password (plus a second time for confirmation).

Do not tick Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer. If you have more than one Windows user account then allowing all users to connect will be configured later.

Tick Make this the default Internet connection if you wish this to be the case.

Step 8

Review the connection details and tick Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop if desired.

Click Finish when done.

You've finished creating the Melb PC dial-up connection, however some of the default settings need adjusting, so proceed to configuring the connection.
