Baby Boomers in Brimbank

The Housing Melbourne – Residential Forecast 2000, contains Mr. Thwaites projections for 2011. He said "In the forecast we can see that by 2011 the biggest growth will be in housing for the 50 to 64 age bracket, due largely to the growing up of the 'baby boomers', and this has implications for planning future housing and other services."

From 2000 - 20011significant levels of housing activity were forecast, with 19% to be built in the west of Melbourne (Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham).

"The forecast shows that many people are happy to live in smaller homes, including apartments, and are often giving up space in preference to a location and lifestyle," Mr. Thwaites said.

Its Not all About Housing

In their Ageing Well Strategy Brimbank Council have acknowledged that a lot more has to be done to ensure that older people in Brimbank, not only have access to housing, but also have access to a robust infrastructure that will support our ageing population.

Its so important that we also think about those people who are not yet retired. They are the ones that are 50 plus and probably still in some kind of employment. They are the ones who live in Sydenham and the surrounding areas and who need to plan for their retirement and especially the kind of lifestyle that they want.

The Sydenham Community Centre during 2005 and beyond will be developing programs and activities for this age group. If you are someone who would like to be involved, please contact Lyn lyng@melbpc.org.au or phone 0418 587 102
