Issue of John Little and Mary Grave
1.   William LITTLE
Occupation: Auctioneer and Estate Agent. Mayor of Ballarat 1889 - 1890.

Born 7 Feb 1839 at Blennerhasset, Cumberland, England (ref his BC).
John was baptised (son of John and Mary Little of Blennerhasset, Husbandman) on 3 March 1839 at Torpenhow, Cumberland (ref the Parish records and Bishop's Transcripts). (Ref IGI)

Ref 1851 census. Lancashire, England. Parish of Liverpool. Address: 5 Mulberry St, Liverpool.
Together with his parents and siblings and others:
William Little. Son. Age 12. Born Baggrow, Cumberland.

William together with his parents and sister Mary Jane emigrated to Victoria at the end of 1851. It is virtually certain that they travelled as unassisted migrants on the "Eagle" which left Liverpool on 8 Sep 1851 and arrived Melbourne 24 Dec 1851. John and Mary Little are listed as passengers but the children are not listed.

In Jan 1859 William was informant for birth and death of brother Robert Henry at Geelong (but he may have been living at Melbourne or Ballarat).

Marr 1862 in Ballarat to Catherine Walford (Kate) CAZALY. See
CAZALY tree.
In the 1865-66 Ballarat and District Directory is a listing for William Little, Estate Agent, Raglan St.

William was a prominent Ballarat citizen, estate agent and author. Link to the extract from 'Ballarat and Vicinity' (William Little life) for a description of the life and work of William Little.
See the page of William Little documents for more information.

An amusing account of the meeting of William Little with Mark Twain (Samuel L Clemens) is attached, from the book "Following the Equator".

It appears that William Little co-authored a document 'Lorne, the Australian Torquay' with James Hingston (1830-1902), a well-known travel writer; this is referred to in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, Supplementary Volume, MUP 2005, pp 179-180.

The attached article (William Little article) can be used with acknowledgment to the author.

Kate died on 25 Oct 1903 and was buried at Ballarat Old Cemetery (AN/8/1). No will/probate was found.

William died 2 Oct 1916 at Clarendon Street, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (Vic reg 12908), ref his death cert. The 'Ballarat Courier' of 4 Oct 1916 carried this advertisement under Deaths: "LITTLE.-On 2nd October, at his residence, Brayton, 205 Clarendon street, Ballarat, William Little; aged 77 years." He was buried 4 Oct at Ballarat Old Cemetery (AN/8/1). No will/probate was found. A newspaper obituary is attached.
