16. Magnus HUGHSON , son of William HUGHSON and Jane MOAR, was born about 1807 in Skerries, Shetland, Sct and died on 26 Feb 1892 in Lerwick, Shetland, Sct, about age 85.

All information found on the census indicate Magnus's date of birth to be about 1807. The Register of Seaman's tickets show a Magnus Hughson No 267948 was born at Skerries 21 May 1808. The ticket issued at Lerwick 10 April 1847 show that he was 5 feet 9 1/2inches tall, brown hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, marks none.

Magnus was a well known sea-captain around Lerwick. He was captain of the "Northern Isles Trader" and in 1867 the captain of "Lady Alice"owned by J Leask. He was married in the parish of Nesting on the same day as his sister - a double wedding perhaps? He was still working at the age of 65 and was concerned about the welfare of two of his daughters, Barbara and Jessie, unmarried at the time.(Later on they both emigrated to New York, U.S.A. and Barbara never married.) He also mentioned in his letter to his son James that there was a lot of illness around in 1874 and a lot of people were dying suddenly including Dr Cowie, Mr Robert Linkletter and Dr Henderson's wife.

In the 1841 Census His wife Janet Henderson was living with her parents and her children Charles, William and Magnus at 17 Burns Lane, Lerwick. Husband Magnus was probably away at sea. James was born later that year.

In 1851 Magnus lived with his family at 140 Commercial Lane, Lerwick and in 1861 Magnus and his wife, James, Margaret, Andrina , Barbara and Jessie were living at No 2 Reform Lane. Magnus's wife Janet died two days after the 1871 Census when they were living at 2 Park Lane with their daughters Barbara and Jessie. The Park Lane house is described in Lerwick during the Last Century 1867-1917: "The house at the top of the stairs to the the right was at one time considered a very good one, well 'plenished. For many years Magnus Hughson, skipper of one of the North Isle packets, lived in this house."

At the time of the 1881 Census he was living in Garthspool with his two daughters, Barbara and Jessie and a grand-daughter Anne G. Jamieson Age 9, Scholar born in Liverpool, daughter of Andrina and her husband William Jamieson. In 1891 Magnus was living in lodgings with his daughter Barbara at No 1 Reform Lane, Stoves Cottages.

Magnus's death certificate states that he died of debility of old age. The informant is his daughter Barbara Hughson.
There is some doubt about his mother's name on the certificate - shown as Elizabeth Johnson. His sister's married name was Elizabeth Johnson. In the 1851 Census Magnus's mother is shown as Jane Hughson, living with her daughter Elizabeth's family on the island of Fetlar

A letter from Magnus to his son James Henderson Hughson in Australia in 1874, with original spelling says:

Janet's ancestors can be traced back to King Robert the Bruce (and further) through her mother Barbara's connection to the Fordyce, Elphinstone, and Bruce families.

Janet married Magnus HUGHSON on 24 Oct 1831 in Nesting, Shetland, Sct.

18. Thomas William HOLLEY , was born about 1826 in Huntingdon, Bedfordshire, Eng died on 21 Oct 1883 in Cheltenham, Vic, Aus, about age 57, and was buried on 23 Oct 1883 in Brighton Cemetery, Melbourne, Vic, Aus.

Thomas and his wife Louisa with their two daughters immigrated to Australia in 1853 on the ship Meteor, arriving in NSW 6 July 1853. DEATH: A coroner's inquest was requested by Thomas's second wife Matilda Holley as she was not satisfied that Thomas had received adequate medical treatment while in the care of his son-in-law Frederick Addicot. Matilda declared that the son-in-law had taken Thomas to his house in Balcombe Road Beaumauris, Cheltenham, without her permission when she was ill. She said that Thomas had been given treatment by a herbalist but no proper medical treatment.

Fredrick Addicott stated that Thomas had been ill for months, paralysed in the arm and leg and was able to move about with some help. He needed to be fed. He retained his mental faculties until about four hours prior to his death. Thomas never expressed any desire to leave his care to go to his his wife at Brighton.Thomas was on good terms with his wife but said he was not fit to go back. Thomas was also of the opinion that a doctor would not be able to save his life. Fredrick also said that Matilda accused him of taking Thomas away when she was insensible but that was not true.He believed that Thomas had left some property, a house and some land and insured his life for $200.

The Coroner's verdict was death from natural causes as Thomas had been suffering with heart and lung disease for a few years. The Coroner said that no doctor would have been able to do anything for Thomas and the death was not suspicious, there was no sign of poison and the condition of the body showed that he had been well cared for.

Thomas Holley's last will and testament was handwritten, leaving insurance money of £200 and any other money owing to him to his wife Matilda. His house at St Andrew St North Brighton and land was left for the use of his wife Matilda until her death. The house was then to be sold and proceeds divided between his children.

Robert Mitchell was a farmer, born in Zennor Cornwall. He died on board ship "The Himalaya" whilst it was berthed at Plymouth the day before the voyage to Australia was to begin. His wife Mary complained to the Shipping Agents that he did not receive proper treatment for the cholera when it struck him and the ship's surgeon was drunk. All his bedding was thrown overboard leaving his three children without any until about six weeks into the trip. He was buried ashore at Plymouth.

Robert married Mary ROWE on 3 Dec 1836 in Madron, Con, Eng.

21. Mary ROWE , daughter of John ROWE and Mary WALLIS, was born on 11 Feb 1817 in Madron, Con, Eng, was christened on 16 Mar 1817 in Madron, Con, Eng died on 20 Jun 1904 in Beechworth, Vic, Aus, at age 87, and was buried on 23 Jun 1904 in Beechworth, Vic, Aus. The cause of her death was old age. Another name for Mary was Mitchell.

Mary Rowe was the second child of John Rowe and Mary Wallis to leave Cornwall and came to Australia aboard the "Himalaya" with her three children, Mary Ann aged 12, Robert James aged 5 and John Thomas aged 2. Mary had deceased children, Nannie, Jane, and John. Leaving England 30 July 1849, and landing in Adelaide on 16 November 1849 after her husband died of cholera on board ship at Plymouth on the eve of departure, Mary must have made the brave decision to continue withour her husband. His body was taken ashore and buried there.

An extract from an enquiry held into the many deaths on board the ship states " Mrs Michell (sic) states that the Surgeon never once gave medecine to her husband while he was lying ill of cholera at Plymouth when (where) he died, that the Surgeon treated both of them very roughly, all of which she complained to the Emigration Agents (i.e. in England) who sympathised with her and spoke to the surgeon to alter his conduct. She is quite sure the doctor was intoxicated on the day on which her husband was attacked with cholera - that her husband's bed was thrown overboard so that her children had none for a considerable part of the voyage, but that about six weeks before arriving the Surgeon gave her one blanket. - and that the doctor's reply when asking him for some ' he wished you were every one thrown overboard."

In Adelaide Mary became acquainted with Charles Colwell Oke also a native Cornishman from Truro who she remarried in about 1851. They had two children in South Australia, their son Charles Colwell Jnr born 6th March 1852 and daughter Sarah Jane Rowe born 28 March 1854. The family then shifted to Beechworth (possibly lured by prospects of finding gold in the thriving gold mining town?) settling first at Two Mile Creek. They had 3 more children, Hannah Maria who died aged 2 in 1859, and William born in 1857. It was probably Mary's residence in Beechworth at this time that drew her brothers there.

Mary's husband Charles Oke had been offered a position with Richard Warren. the newspaper proprietor. ) Charles Oke continued in his employment in charge of the job printing department at the Advertiser almost up to the time of his death on 5 January 1898.

Mary Oke's previously robust health began to suffer after the death of her husband. Two years before her death Mary had an accident and fractured her thigh. This injury left her unable to care for herself. Her daughter Mary Warren then nursed her at her house in Camp Street Beechworth where she died of old age and bronchitis at the age of 88 at 1 o'clock in the afternoon of 20 June 1904. Mary had been attended by Dr Skinner, who as well as being a high profile doctor in the town was reputedly the first person in Beechworth to own a car. He also was known for creating the secret recipe for a popular herbal remedy, produced later as Ecks Beer by the Murray Breweries. Mary is buried in the Beechworth Cemetery with her husband Charles Oke, daughter Mary Warren and son-in-law, Richard Warren.

The obituary in the Ovens & Murray Advertiser 25 June 1904 states:
"The deceased lady had a very retentive memory which seemed little affected by her advancing years and took pleasure in recounting the many interesting episodes of her married life and was of a cheerful temperament, which secured the active sympathy of many friends in the declining evening of her life, when weakness had partially incapacitated her from facility of movement."
