4. Leslie Holley HUGHSON , son of James Henderson HUGHSON and Ellen Eliza HOLLEY, was born on 23 May 1887 in Melbourne, Vic, Aus and died on 7 Jun 1965 in Preston, Melbourne, Vic, Aus, at age 78.

Leslie married Mary Ann MITCHELL in 1907 in Richmond, Melbourne, Vic, Aus.

Their children were:

          i.  Leslie William Mitchell HUGHSON (born on 12 Sep 1907 Richmond, Melbourne, Vic, Aus - died in 1985 in West Heidelberg, Melbourne, Vic, Aus)

Les played football for 5 various Victorian Football League teams (now Australian Football League), which was almost unheard of in those days. He still holds the record of playing with the equal greatest number of league clubs which were Fitzroy, Richmond, Collingwood, St Kilda and Hawthorn. Les then coached Stawell football club.

In an article in the Sunday Press magazine in 1975 Sports Editor Ian McDonald says that Ted Whitten and Ron Barassi have often been called "Mr Football" but Les or "Tiny" as he was known deserved the title more. Les was 6'2 and a burly 16 1/2 stone ruckman. He played in a Fitzroy side with three brownlow medallists, Haydn Bunton, Chicken Smallhorn, and Dinny Ryan.

His football career ended in 1940 when Les enlisted in the A.I.F. and served in the middle East during the World War 2.

ii.  Irma Ellen HUGHSON (born on 25 Jan 1911 Collingwood, Melbourne, Vic, Aus - died in 1999 in Vic, Aus)
iii.  Phyllis Emily HUGHSON (born on 11 Mar 1913 Sale, Vic, Aus)
iv.  Frederic Lionel HUGHSON (born on 21 May 1914 Collingwood, Melbourne, Vic, Aus - died on 22 Oct 1987 in Preston, Melbourne, Vic, Aus.

Fred was a champion footballer who was Captain-Coach of Fitzroy Football Club when the team won the 1944 Premiership.

In July 1933 Fred received serious internal injuries and broken ribs when he thought he could stop a couple of waterside workers playing football with the Wednesday Industrial League. His condition was so critical his two brothers were called to give a blood transfusion.

The news spread and 30 members of the Sunnyside football Club offered to stand by Fred's bedside in relays through the night. When he left the Royal Melbourne Hospital four weeks later, doctors warned him never to play football again but he did not agree so he went to Preston (VFA).

Fred was recruited from Preston starting his career with Fitzroy as a forward, kicking 62 goals to lead the goalkicking in 1938. His coach, Dan Minogue, moved him to full back and it proved a success with Fred finishing third in the Brownlow Medal in 1941. He played 164 games between 1938 and 1947. Fred was chosen as the full back in the Fitzroy Team of the Century.

Fred's drop kick of 89 yards 11 inches (76.18 metres) against an american grid iron player in 1943 set an official world record.

Fred was an inspirational and popular leader. It was said that his players would walk over broken glass for him. He captained Victoria in 1945 and was a regular state player. Fred retired at the end of 1947 and went to coach South Warrnambool.
