Mick was a dedicated sportsman who loved playing football and tennis. He played football for Preston and Carlton after winning the best and fairest for Havelock in the Saturday morning competition, then went to the Fitzroy Football Club where his brothers Fred and Les also played.
Mick represented the State of Victoria in interstate games. He was a life member of Fitzroy, playing as centre man from 1937 until he joined the Air Force in World War 2 and left league football (now AFL) soon after he returned from the war to Captain-Coach the Fairfield Football club to a Premiership in 1947.
In the "Herald" newspaper 4 July 1938, Mick's meteoric rise to football fame was described as almost phenomenal. At the age of 21 his brilliance in the centre had earned him a reputation as one of the champions of the Victorian League (AFL) He was a beautiful high mark, an accurate pass and a splendid position player.
