Weave World - Clive Barker

What initially drew me to this book in amongst the massive piles at one of the huge book sales that are often on in the exhibition center (Jeff’s Shed) in Melbourne was the colourful nature of its cover, I went on to read what it was about and decided it sounded like a good read.

I didn’t know exactly what to expect at first, being basically a fantasy novel written by an author more recognized for his horror stories, there is even mention of how it was a major departure from the norm in his authors notes at the start. So with no real preconceptions I dove in.

The Novel proved to be an engrossing tale of an average guy called Cal who lives in England, his life is turned upside down after he chases one of his pigeons and finds himself in a new world of magic and danger.

It basically all begins when Cal follows his pigeon and comes across a strange congregation of birds, then chases it and falls onto a carpet/rug thing and has a glimpse of a wonderland. The carpet happens to be where almost all the magic left in the world has been stored, it is actually a world all of its own, a Weave World.

Cal returns home with some minor injuries and later goes on a quest to find the carpet, he then runs into some shady characters that are also after the carpet for their own reasons.

On the cover it says The ultimate magic carpet ride, this is relly not a bad description, there is then an ongoing rollercoaster of an adventure involving Cal that is spread over several years after this point involving compleate memory loss the death of his father and a coma. I won't mention much more as I don't want to ruin the experiance for anyone, but it is definately a ride.

It is an engrosing novel that I highly recomend.
