Tam and I joined the Hodegon Garrison of the New Varangian Guard inc (NVG) at the start of 2002, we met up at the first Lord of the Rings movie where they were doing a display, a bit of combat and a few bits and pieces of stuff they had made that they were showing off. We went and had a chat, tried on some armour and at the start of the next year we went along to a meeting to check it out.

The NVG is a re-enactment group that is based around a unit of the Byzantine Emperor's mercenary body gaurd, and anyone they were in contact with, this gives you a lot of scope with few hundred years of history and many races to chose to portray. The majority of people do Rus Viking and Byzantine stuff.

We are not affiliated with the SCA, but I have attended several events run by the SCA.

My two favourite things about this caper are combat and making stuff, it will depend on my current mood as to what is may favourite activity at any given time.

When we fight we use steel weapons, we actually hit each other but pull the blows a bit, also the weapons are blunt. We have specific target areas (no face thrusts for example since we have open faced helmets).

Every lunch break at work I am out side busily working away on some project or another, this keeps my workmates entertained and allows me to feel like I have achieved someting for the day even if I have a crap day at work.






At any given time I have a large number of projects on the go. This section contains photo esays that I have put together during the construction of various items, they are for the most part works in progress and will be added to as I work on the items.
