The Forbidden Zone - Whitley Strieber

This book was a bit of a sci-fi horror cross-over, anything that can be tossed in that basket has the potential to be a good read, provided it is done well of course. Not totally sure when it is actually meant to be set, I would say late 80s due to the fact that the only celular phones that anyone seems to have are carphones, not the mobile phones that are so common these days.

The story mostly takes place around a group of small country towns. I've decided I am never going near small country towns in America becuase strange things seem to allways happen there.

The basis of the story is a science experiment gone wrong, somehow a gateway to a parallel universe is opened, later we find out it is actually a gateway to Earth's very didstant past where the most highly evolved species are giant insects. The start to break through into the realworld and strang things start happening as they eventually end up trying to take over.

There is a purple light involved that causes spontaneous orgasms and eventually mutation into foot soldiers for the bugs. It is enjoyable to read and also somewhat strange.
