Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter
Although I am sure we meet him in an earlier novel I remember Larry the apprentice animator distinctly being in this one. Larry is a pretty much fresh out of college and has come to work at the same company as Anita; she is mentoring him. Larry wants to be an Executioner just like Anita.
Anita and Larry are flown off to a site to raise some corpses and find out who has ancestral rights to a piece of land that some developers want to build a resort on.
I believe that this is the Laurell K Hamilton's first experiments with the Sidhe, later she started the new series (Merry Gentry series). From what I have read she was not totally happy with her attempts at these folk in this novel and decided that they needed to be separated from Anita's world.
This novel has nothing to do with venues at all, but the name comes from some sort of Sidhe deamon thing that the bodies were originally placed there to keep prisoner (from memory)
I think it is in this novel that Anita discovers that she can control lesser vampires like she would a zombie, or if not discovered put it to good use for the first time, I won't go into the great trick she pulls using that particular power as it is one of the highlights of the novel.
I'm not saying this was a crap novel, although this is probably my least favorite of the Anita Blake novels. It is quite good in its own right because it is the novel that I remember the most as having Larry in it, and Anita's funky vampire control trick. I feel Larry is somewhat of an under developed character that has been left waiting in the wings to do something with later, I am looking forward to finding out what it is.
Very cool cover art on this one, creepy purple mist with skull things glaring out of it complimented by a very nice headstone. I love the knot work on the headstone.
There are parts in this novel that further the overall story, but there is also the Sidhe thing that basically popped up in this novel then went away, bit strange as far as consistency goes, but good that it spawned another great series.
****AMENDMENT****
Looks like I stuffed this review up, It has been pointed out that it is highly likely that Bloody Bones was also the name of the Bar owned by the Sidhe.
