History and Terminology: The term 'regency' used here, is somewhat inaccurate. The style of fashion which is often referred to as 'Regency' or 'Empire' style developed over the period 1795-1820, and the terms by which it is referred to cover different sections of this period. Strictly speaking, Empire, refferring to the Napoleonic empire, is from 1800-1814, whilst Regency, reffering to the regency of King George IV of England lasts from 1811-1820. After 1820, George IV ascended legitimately to the throne and his reign continued until 1830. Over this period (1795-1830) styles changed from a simplistic fashion to a more ornate and heavily decorated fashion during the 1820s.
