What the media has reported:

From the Leader Newspaper, 2000:

Put the puppy straight

"Like most humans, obedient animals must be taught to socialise. And the Maroondah Veterinary Clinic has been hosting puppy socialisation classes for more than five years.

Vet Dennis Oliver said the program was designed to integrate puppies with other dogs before they developed behavioural problems.

(...)

John Williams, a professional dog trainer, not only instructs owners during the classes, but helps them solve other problems with their pets.

Like television vet Harry Cooper, Mr Williams specialises in problem-solving for dogs, such as biting and disobedience.

"There was a woman I helped who had a dog that was chasing the cat around the house," Mr Williams said. "And another woman who had problems getting her dog out of the house when she went shopping. Most problems occur when a dog begins to think they're the leader of the pack, which can become a problem that has to be reversed."

Mr Williams said he rarely encountered problems that could not be solved.

To solve behavioural problems he quizzes dog owners about the pet's actions and used reward-based methods which often have to be repeated to solve the problem.

"I love helping people...understand their dogs," he said.
