1757- 1833

PETER THE CUTLER

Pierre Augier migrated to India from Savoie in France in 1787.This page is a record of the seven generations of his descendants.

He had eleven children, four from his first marriage and seven from his second. Most of his children married spouses with a French connection.

Adelaide Augier one of his daughters married Louis Mathew Delanougerede and a number of Augiers married Delanougeredes in subsequent generations and a number of Augiers married Augiers or relatives.

The information on this site is a work in progress and has been compiled from several sources and includes Birth Death and Marriage Records as well as oral records of similar and other pertinent events.

The spelling of the Delanougerede name includes de la Nougerede and De La Nougerede. While looking at the records in Aime in France we note that the name Augier was spelt Ougier. When Pierre Augier arrived in India in 1787 relations between France and India were strained and possibly the reason for using the anglicised form of Peirre.

Few of the descendants are now living in India and none that we know by the names of Augier or Delanougerede

FirstGeneration

PIERRE AUGIER was born in Aime in Tarantaise in Savoie and arrived in Bengal in 1787.

The year of his birth –1757- has been derived from the Record of the birth of his grandchild Francois Pierre Marie Saintyves in Chandernagore in 1825 in which his age is given as 68 years old.

In Selections from the Calcutta Gazettes there is a reference to his buying an Armourer’s business in 1790. In 1793 an advertisement for his business it is given as Peter Augier, Cutler and Armourer . In his Will he gives his occupation as Gunmaker.

From 1795 all Europeans in Calcutta and its environs, who were not in the Honorable East India Company, were required to register their names to the Register of Covenants and Peter Augier is on The List of Europeans in Calcutta on 13^th November 1804 as a Cutler in No 9 Cossitollah.

At the time of writing no record on his first marriage has been sighted. As his first child Mathew was born in 1795 any date before that would be a possible date of marriage probably closer to that than earlier. 1794 would be a good starting point. He married ANNETTE (unknown) born in Madras. The year of her birth is derived c. 1790 from the marriage records of Rose Augier in which it notes that she died at the age of 30 years and records his late wife born in Madras who died Calcutta 3^rd December 1820. There is another record which states Mrs Annette Augier died in Calcutta in 1820 aged 30 years (and some months and days), wife and mother of 7 children.

This is not his first wife as she is about the same age of his son Mathew.

In his will in it is recorded that Peter Augier departed this life in Calcutta. on the Eighteen hundred and Thirty Three on the Thirtieth day of September last.

The Will also states that Peter Augier who was in his lifetime a French Subject and an inhabitant of Calcutta in the Province of Bengal.

Both he and his eldest son used the French spelling of their first name on Chandernagore records. i.e. Pierre and Mathieu but used the anglicised version on the will Peter and Matthew

MATHEW AUGIER. married Jane Elizabeth Dufour daughter of Col F.Dufour at St. John’s Calcutta 26^th November 1817.

Mathew’s year of birth is derived as 1795 from the record of the birth of Francois Marie Saintyves in 1825 in which his age is given as 30 years. In the will of his father Peter Augier, it is recorded that he was, of Cossitollah in the town of Calcutta was an Assistant in the Calcutta Mint at the time of the death of his father.

Francoise Marie Saintyves presents a male child born in Chandernagore on the 29^th of September last at 9.40 in the morning son of the declarant and his wife Rose Augier and they wish to name him Francois Pierre Marie. These works of declaration and presentation are made in the presence of Pierre Augier, maternal grandfather of the child , armourer, aged 68 years and Pierre Jean Moniot merchant aged 30 years uncle of the child by his marriage to Mrs. Sophie Augier aunt of the said child.

Notice is herby given

That Mr. Jon Marklew , Gun-Maker, late Foreman to Jove and Son, Oxford Street, London, now returning home has disposed of all his tool and receipt for branning Gun Barrels to Mr. Peter Augier, Gun-maker and Cutler, who will carry on the same business as above and hope to meet with the encouragement of the gentlemen of the settlement.

Mr. P. Augier,* Cutier and Armourer,

Informs the public that he has taken another house near the one he lately occupied, two housed lower down , No 51 Cossitollah, which will be more commodious form him, as well as for those who will honor him with their commands , either to repair or sell arms &c., &c. He will do his endeavours to work at as reasonable a rate as possible, and will undertake to keep any person’s razors in good order , at the rate of two Rupees per month, as several gentlemen advised him to do so; those who wish to dispose of arms of any kind may have them sold at his house on paying the usual commission. It will be his constant study to endeavour to give satisfaction to those who will honor him with their orders.

THE 28^TH NOVEMBER 1795

Peter Augier, Cutler and Armourer, No 51 Cossitollah,

Informs the public in general that he has for sale double and single barrel guns, a left handed gun from Twigg, very light; a variety of rifle guns and pistols of the first quality, in cases well garnished by Twigg., Clark and Jover, and all sorts of fire-arms and swords at very moderate price; he has also for sale a fine cross-bow from Degg and a capital organ with five cylinder barrels.

P.A. stocks guns with Europe walnut-wood , and mounts and repairs them in the same manners as done in Europe; he also buys all sorts of fire-arms and swords.

In order to obviate objections made to the charges of Peter Augier, he has determined to reduce them, and in future to charge one quarter less than hitherto for all articles sold or work done by him, by which measure he hopes to ensure a preference; he has catalogues prepared of the articles he has for sale for the inspection of the public.

Gentleman who may be pleased to favour Augier with their orders, either to buy or sell on the usual commission, may depend on every attention being paid. Razors kept in order at one and a half Rupee the month. Fowling pieces lent out at one Rupee and one Rupee eight nanas each by the day, on the value of the piece being deposited , or security given for the same; and in event of the piece being returned damaged, the expenses of the repairs must be paid by the borrower, or if the damage irreparable, the piece must be paid for.

The Will of Pierre Augier

In the name of God Amen,

I Peter Augier of Cossitollah in the Town of Calcutta , Gunmaker, being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will and testament in manner following. I give and bequeath to my Executor herin after named my two houses in Cossitolah and Weston’s Lane in the said town of Calcutta and my house in Rue de Paris Chandernagore together with all my personal estate and effects and all sums of money owing to me upon trust to my executors with all convenient speed after my decease to sell and dispose of and call in and compel payment of the same and the proceeds after payment of my just debts to pay and divide equally among my children herinafter named and share and share alike that is to say my sons Mathew, Claude and John and my daughters, Rosalie, Adelaide, Louisa, Sophie, Rose, Lise and Claudine. My daughter Perrine the wife of Mr. Joseph Rondo has already received from me the sum of Sicca Rupees Two Thousand in bar of her claims in my estate and has therefore nothing more to receive from the same. I hereby revoke all former and other wills and testaments by me at any time heretofore made and nominate conditions and appoint my said sons Mathew, Claude and John executors hereof. In witness hereof and hereunto and subscribed my hand and seal the Fifteenth Day of May in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty Three.

The Humble Petition of Mathew Augier

Herewith That the said Peter Augier who was in his lifetime a French Subject and an Inhabitant of Calcutta in the Province of Bengal on the thirtieth day of September last past departed this life in Calcutta aforesaid having left property and effects within the Calcutta jurisdiction of the Honorable Court to be administered and having first duly made and published his last Will and Testament In writing which hereunto annexed and marked with the letter A.

That your petitioner in one of the sons of the said Peter Augier and is an inhabitant of Calcutta aforesaid and is desiring of taking out Probate thereof

Your Petitioner therefore humbly prays your Lordships that he be sworn in execution of the last Will and Testament of the said Peter Augier deceased and that thereupon Probate thereof do issue to him accordingly reserving Power

And your petition shall ever pray

minor aged 14 years born at Calcutta on the 28^th September 1810 legitimate daughter of Pierre Augier, armourer native of Aime in Tarentaise in Savoie, living in Chandernagore in the house of Mr Moniot in the Rue de Paris and his late wife Anne Augier, native of Madras who died at Calcutta 3^rd December 1820.

In the presence of Matheiu Augier brother of the bride aged 30 years (Verificatieur) at the Central Mint Calcutta living in Chandernagore at Rue de Traverse, Francois Frederic Cambanon (Captaine Aux long cours?) aged 36 years living at Rue da Baz–bazase, Pierre Jean Moniot merchant aged 30 years living at Rue de Paris. William Vincent advocates clerk aged 23 years living in Calcutta staying in this town in Rue de Paris. These last three witnesses are the brothers-in-law of the bride. They sign with the contracting parties and the father .

The Making of the Web Page.

We received a family tree in the post from brother Philip (sounds a bit religious) in England about 1995. This was an introduction to genealogy. A little more serious than oral history or folklore. The difference we found is that some genealogy software requires the evidence of records.

In the folklore we were told by my mother, Elsie Augier that Lord Tedder married a Daisy Augier. This was when I (Douglas) loined the Air Force in 1953. The Father of the Royal Air Force married an Augier and here it was on the tree. More about that below. Isn’t it nice to have a Lord in the Family tree? Puts one a bit up on the social scale and almost as good as having a convict in the early settlers in Australia.

On our visit to England (or is it the U.K.?),, in 1998, we visited Audrey’s sister Rosemary Taylor, who is a professional researcher and she told us that she had looked at Lord Tedder’s biography and there was no mention of a marriage to Daisy Augier. We were indignant. Someone must be trying to hide this marriage and other such thoughts came to mind. We telephoned Ashley Augier, who is the eldest, son of the eldest son of the eldest son of Pierre Augier ~Peter the Cutler,(and as we found out) was Daisy Tedder’s niece. He set the record straight. Daisy had married Lord Tedder’s elder brother who was also in the Royal Air Force and in India (it may have been the Royal Flying Corps at the time). He died shortly after they were married. They had one son Harold Tedder who is on the tree. We are not sure as to whether he has inherited his grandfather’s title as his grandfather was a Sir? Tedder as well. However we had a wake at 38 Rosalind Gardens in Southampton, where Philip and Peggy live, on the loss of the Lord from our family tree. We do however have a C.I.E., an O.B.E. and an M.B.E. and a M.C. that we are aware of and maybe more. Not yet entered in the documents above but will be when time and energy permits.

Not long after, we got on to the Internet and after some browsing we finally arrived on a web page British Ancestors in India. We got in touch with Cathy Day (by email of course ). Cathy was supportive and gave us some good suggestions. Not long afterwards she asked us if we would like to join a List for people searching for their Ancestors in India.

After joining the list our first find was from Norman Ashton in Canada who was looking for descendants of a Larkins who was a printer in Calcutta who died at the turn of the 19th century, Philip and Douglas’ grandmother was a Larkins who was a printer and after exchanging messages we found we were related to his wife. He had details of the Larkins family and we helped fill in some more from what we knew. His name above is linked to his excellent website.

15^th February 2002

We made many friends around the world on the India list and have met some in the flesh. Many sent us names of Augiers and gave us many leads . Sylvia Murphy, in Sydney Jill Grey, in England Daphne Langlois in New Zealand and Ian Poyntz in Texas? are among those with whom we have exchanged many messages. Simon and Jacqui Bowen also appeared on the list. Simon is a descendant of Peter the Cutler and both are also actively researching their ancestors. We met Simon and Jacqui in England at the Augier/Delnougerede reunion in 1998 . He was searching for his connection with the Augiers as his mother was an Augier before she married and was the descendant of a John (Jean Jacques)

16th February 2002

One of the messages we received from the India List related to the Will of Pierre Augier and another from Keith Cornelius mentioned the marriage of Rose Augier daughter of Pierre Augier who came from Tarrantaine, Aime in France.

Concurrent with our interest in our ancestors is an interest in books on the British Raj which now number over 130. We purchased five Volumes of Extracts from the Calcutta Gazette from 17XX to 18xx. After buying the volumes we were browsing through them on the way back to the car and spotted the advertisement of Peter Augier above relating to the Cutler Business. Audrey was sure he was our ancestor but at this stage we did not have a link.

11^th March 02

The days have been flying by. Tried to change the method of putting on the Web Page through Excel and it looked excellent.(pun unintended) However when we tried to put it on the server we lost all the information. All the hard work had gone and nothing was showing up on the web page. However after tooing and froing (the spelling checker has underlined these words) we eventually reverted to the original document. Our problem is that all the contents are on one page and although there are links it is not as we would like it. However we shall keep trying. Any tips on DIY Web Pages appreciated.

Back to the goings on in genealogy.~ tea is getting cold as the information is being entered.

However after being sent information that there was a will we eventually sent for the relevant microfilm from the LDS and it was an exciting find. We are sure that those searching for ancestors get a buzz on occasions like this. (Share your buzz with us) It named his children including Mathew who up to that time was the earliest descendant that was recorded. It even named a son John as one of his descendants and the Augier link with Simon Bowen was established.

25^th March 02

Phil (earlier known as Brother Philip) sent us a message and advised us on the people who worked hard to collect the information that is put on this web page. The tree was first researched by Diane Andrews (nee Augier) the daughter of Kenneth and Pam Augier. The Augier/Delanougerede get togethers held annually, were initiated by Aunty Tess Lucas and an abundance of photos of the various gatherings have been taken. Martin and Jeffrey, twin sons of Ken and Pam Augier have made video recordings at some of the gatherings. Mandy Tristam, daughter of Louise Delanougerede and Thomas Tristam has taken of the role of researcher of family records. Vera Myers and Ernistine Renee Augier provided some information. Richard Augier has put in a tremendous amount of work on the computer.

If we write any more the acknowledgements the para will be twice as long as the information and three times as boring unless your name is there.

16^th June 2002.

Today is the 35^th Anniversary of our arrival in Australia. Audrey has now spent more than half her life in the land of Oz and Douglas’ fraction is getting there. Does this make us half Australians? Oi O (which is half of Oi Oi Oi)

Back to the genealogy narrative. A few more details need to be added.

On January 28^th 2001, Lisa Perry from the UK sent us an email , having got our details from India-L , that her father –in-law was visiting her and one of his ancestors was an Augier who married a Delnougerede. We got in touch with her father-in-law and we exchanged emails and have gradually untangled the relationship.

We have since been to Queensland and met Derek Perry in Brisbane and he has added extensively to the Delanougerede side of the family. We have an Augier/Delanougerede reunion once a year!

Additionally a Pat Desbrulais in the UK contacted him and added the Desbrulais connection. She also mentioned in her correspondence that one of the early fairly well off Augiers died intestate and there was a concerted effort at tracing connections to him to see who could inherit the goods. As an aside Derek gave us a copy of a will of his ancestors in which he left his tin desk to someone. For some reason we Britannia Biscuits come to mind when taking of tin.

3 June 2003.

IN May this year we had a visit from Margaret and Tony Hurst. Margaret is not a descendant of Peter the Cutler, However she is the descendant of one Alfred Michel. The connection is through Eva Michel who married Edgar Delanougerede who is in the family photograph.
