Was born in Melbourne and educated at Ivanhoe Grammar School; Helen Street State School, Northcote; Little Ealing Secondary Modern Boys School, London and Northcote High School. Studied accountancy part-time after leaving school. Worked for Public and Chartered Accountants in Australia and England, specialising in auditing. Was Office Manager for the Genealogical Society of Victoria. Spent 11 years as an Administrative Officer in the Australian Department of Defence in Melbourne. Has qualifications in Accountancy and Management.

Has over 35 years experience in genealogical research. Memberships include the Genealogical Society of Victoria; Royal Historical Society of Victoria; Port Phillip Pioneers' Group; Victorian Genealogists Using Microcomputers; Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies; Society of Australian Genealogists and Local History Societies. Has published numerous articles and indexes for genealogists.
