Melb
PC has run its own Internet service since 1994 staffed by volunteers.
The stated purpose of the Internet team is to provide the best service
for its member subscribers while still offering minimum costs.
The dial-up service provides 56 kbps modem technology both in the
Melbourne area and throughout Australia for the cost of a local
phone call. The modem to phone ratio is such that in normal
circumstances, dial-up users have unlimited time access to
the Internet.
A timer does operate, so that in rare circumstances where all modems
are approaching full use, only those who have been connected the
longest (several days in some circumstances) are disconnected.
This guarantees a very high modem availability. Combined with this
extended time, is a service in which there is no
quota on the data downloaded or uploaded. You may download or
upload as much as you wish.
Subscribers may receive mail until their mailbox size exceeds 10 MB
of stored email messages,
in addition to
full browsing activities, FTP, news, etc.
Web Home
Page Hosting. Subscribers to the Melb PC Internet Service may have
a 10 MB space allocated on a web server for no additional
cost. Here they can have their own webpage accessible worldwide in the
format
http://member.melbpc.org.au/~username,
or simply use the space allocation for secure offline storage.
The service is available to all Melb PC members for a annual subscription
flat fee of $120.00 (including GST). A post-configuration kit is available
to assist with easy installation for software running under Windows
95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP/Vista. Free phone and online help is available free of charge.
The full Description of Service and the Internet Access Agreement
may be viewed (pdf viewer) or down-loaded (490 kByte file) as

of the Melbourne PC User Group.
