Search and Rescue Case Report

A boat carrying four men on a fishing trip capsized about one mile offshore. It was dusk and there was a slight chop on the sea. The water temperature was about 12 degrees Celsius. It had not been possible to alert anyone to the situation as the capsize was a sudden event. As night was approaching, one of the men decided to swim to the shore, while the others stayed with the boat.

Some two hours passed, and a second man set out to swim to the shore as it was thought the first man had not made it. The other two remained with the capsized boat. However the first man had successfully reached the shore and had alerted the Search and Rescue authorities and a Search and Rescue was underway.

The sad ending to this true incident is that the second man was found dead floating in the water probably overcome by exhaustion and hypothermia. It was noted that he was without clothes and was not wearing a life-jacket. The two who remained with the boat were rescued.
